A faixa é luminosa e luzes de néon nos cegando, espelhos, vidros e jóias. A fonte de água mostrada fora do Bellagio é espectacular, quase hipnotizadora. Parece haver um hotel em cada esquina, e onde não existem hotéis, existem casinos.

Eu quase não sei como descrevê-los; alguns deles são simples, mas outros são bastante coisa. Os americanos com excesso de peso estão de pé nas máquinas em corredor após corredor, atirando amendoins na boca.

Belas mulheres vestidas como pavões entram na sala. Elas obtêm muita atenção da parte da multidão de fotógrafos japoneses e alemães, enquanto os jogadores nas mesas de roleta estão demasiado centrados para se importar com isso. Uma vez que o álcool é de graça, desde que você esteja jogando, muitos “inteligentes” visitantes tomam um assento em um jogo apenas para as bebidas. Dentro de uma hora, a maioria deles já gastaram tanto dinheiro com apostas imprudentes, que abrange muito mais do que as despesas dos casinos.

Barry Manilow está se apresentando em algum lugar e muitas pessoas estão falando sobre isso. Celina Dion não cantará mais em Las Vegas, dando lugar a Cher.

O hotel é limpo e agradável, mas não particularmente de luxo. Embora eu já passei por lugares como Four Hotels e Caesars Palace estou silenciosamente desejando que eu fosse mais milionária do que eu sou. Talvez tenha chegado o momento de tentar a minha sorte/habilidade em uma das mesas de poker? Eu e os meus amigos decidimos pagar uma visita ao Casino no MGM Grand. É bonito lá, e o clima é mais descontraído do que eu pensava que seria. Nós começamos a jogar Blackjack, mas estava perdendo em sequência. Um de meus amigos ganha um par de centenas de dólares, o que torna o resto de nós pensando que poderíamos facilmente fazer o mesmo. Grande erro. Optámos por Baccarat, que normalmente significa bastante boas chances. Outro dos meus amigos ganhou cerca de $100 dólares. Frustrada, e com cerca de cem dólares menos do que aquilo que vim com, eu sentei em uma das mesas de poker. O jogo é de “Three-Card” Poker. Estou recebendo cartas decentes, mas neste momento tenho ganhado tantos Russos que estou apostando de forma muito corajosa. No entanto, eu me armei para reconquistar minhas perdas e agora tenho o mesmo valor com o qual eu vim. Meus amigos estão no caça moedas, onde as moedas estão caindo como chuva e as luzes estão cintilando. Eu me mudei para o “Deixa o Poker me Levar”, e finalmente, estou realmente ganhando algum. Dois dos meus amigos vêm para se juntar a mim, e felizmente eles conseguem me convencer de sair enquanto estava me dando bem.

Fomos para um delicioso jantar no Spago. Estando em um dos mais baratos hotéis, podíamos sustentar 3 refeições com um bom vinho. Nós permanecemos lá todo resto da noite, somente nos divertindo, e falando sobre as chances da cultura de Las Vegas.

No dia depois, estou de volta as mesas de poker, onde a casa leva todo meu dinheiro que ganhei na noite anterior. Claro né.

Eu acredito que a melhor solução para o meu problema é me mudar. Embar minhas coisas e parti para uma parte do sul da Espanha. Eu posso me imaginar inclinando-me para trás em uma cadeira de algum café-bar ao ar livre, passando tardes inteiras só apostando, levantando, ganhando, e até mesmo perdendo… Se meus amigos pudessem vir comigo, não haveria nenhum problema  sobre isso. O problema é que nós somos muitos unidos às famílias e aos trabalhos, e por isso, é difícil isso acontecer. Pelo menos não nos próximos quinze anos.

Até lá, talvez eu deva comprar uma barraca ou algo para armar no jardim. Eu poderia comprar um daqueles ”infra vermelhos”, e tudo seria bom, no mínimo, por pelo menos três meses do ano. Mas quando a neve chegar… Eu estarei sem escolha a não ser jogar nos casinos online outra vez. Às vezes eu até gosto.

Eu também gosto de jogar à noite, muito mais do que durante do dia. Eu acho que minha mente começa ficar mais afiada após às 5, ou por ai, e eu gosto de está acordado na noite muito mais do que de manhã. Eu sou mais ou menos como uma coruja de noite, assim, eu prefiro sempre juntar-me aos meus companheiros em um bar ou em um café aberto na noite.

Em geral, eu tenho descoberto que eu me importo menos e menos com os jogos atuais. Eu tenho mais prazer na parte mais social do jogo de poker. Unindo-me com meus amigos, dizendo histórias, puxando gracejos, estimulando o riso. O poker é uma das melhores maneiras de passar um tempo junto, na minha opinião.

Mas não muitos filmes são relacionados ao poker em particular. Mas em 2007 o filme “Lucky You” foi filmado, com Erich Bana e Drew Barrymore como os autores líderes. Uma sábia escolha desse casting; ele é atraente e desempenhou o suficiente para aparecer na multidão masculina e a maioria das mulheres não importam identificar-se com o doce Barrymore.

A definição é boa em Las Vegas, 2003, quando o amador do poker, Huck (Bana), está tentando fazer sua fortuna através dos jogos. Ele é um jogador qualificado, mas conhecido como não saber sair do jogo. Uma noite ele conhece Billie (Barrymore), com quem ele começa a ter uma relação de amizade. Ao mesmo tempo o pai de Hucks (desempenhado por Robert Duvall) está na cidade para competir em jogos de altas apostas. Ele é um jogador que já venceu prêmios no poker, e os torneios do World Series of Poker estão chegando. Isto é algo que Huck está muito consciente também…

Na verdade, o fictício World Series of Poker do filme teve muitas coisas similares ao real WSOP que foi realizado em 2003. Os dois tiveram 839 jogadores e ambos foram ganhos por alguém que não tinha muita experiência jogando em torneios ao vivo.

O filme reconheceu ter poucas falhas. O tempo está um pouco lento, na qual poderia ser ajustado somente com uma melhor edição. Além disso, o carácter de Huck é relacionado com um pobre homem, o que não é credível vendo o grande jogador de poker que ele é.

Tirando isso, o filme está valendo a pena ser assistido, principalmente por Eric Bana. Já em filmes como “Troy” e “Hulk” ele mostrou que pode balancear poder com fraqueza numa maneira acreditável. Ele é muito bom desempenhando em contenção. No meu ponto de vista, Drew Barrymore fez o seu melhor desempenho na produção de seu filme Donnie Darko, mas ela nunca teve quaisquer problemas reais atuando de uma maneira emocionante. Uma pena que ela tem um pé preso no amor pela comédia…

Se você estiver interessado em jogos de cartas, eu recomendaria esse filme simplesmente com base no quanto é divertido assistir altas apostas no poker. Neste caso, o jogo foi um pouco elevado para ser considerado realístico, mas pessoalmente eu não quero saber.

Christopher Reeves provavelmente não acreditava em Superman. Mas ainda deve ter sido divertido ter filmado ele.

Mas no século 21, há três bem específicos filmes produzidos em Hollywood que demonstram quando se trata de trapacear, apostar e ganhar a vida nos negócios das apostas. Naturalmente eu estou falando sobre os filmes com o charme do vilão Danny Ocean e a turma que ele une para organizar vários tipos de trapaças e ainda sair como um tipo de Robin-Hood.

No primeiro filme, a gangue está em Las Vegas atrás de Terry Benedict e dos trés Casinos que ele é dono, chamados Bellagio, The Mirage e The MGM Grand. Acidentalmente ele é namorado do amor perdido de Danny, Tess. Usando todos os truques do livro – e muitos outros que você não poderia achar lá – os onze estão tentando roubar cerca de 160 milhões de dólares de Benedict. Muitas coisas acontecem durante essas tentativas, junto com um fundo com boas trilhas sonoras.

Oceans Eleven” é carregado com uma porção de ótimos atores, todos desempenhando seus personagens facilmente para o filme, nos dando um balanço no humor e tensão. Em ambos, nesse filme e outros dois que seguem, nós temos o prazer de assistir George Clooney, Brad Pit, Andy Garcia, Matt Damon, Casey Affleck e Elliot Gould junto com outros.

Alguns atores “convidados” que valem a pena mencionarem na trilogia são Julia Roberts, Catherina Zeta-Jones, Al Pacino e Ellen Barkin. Muitas cenas são filmadas dentro dos Casinos ou em mesas de poker. E sim, é um jogo sujo.

Em “Ocean`s Thirteen” há muitas sequências onde está enfatizado que nossos anti-heróis estão ficando velhos, ou pelo menos crescendo. Há uma cena adorável onde o tremendo Rusty (Brad Pitt), surpreende Dannt Ocean (Geroge Clooney) assistindo Opera, bebendo vinho tinto e chorando. Quando Rusty entra silenciosamente em seu apartamento e assiste o resto do show junto com Danny, e começa a sair lágrimas de seus olhos por saber como a Opera faz caridade.

Com tudo mais, os três filmes são parecidos um com os outros. Mas são bastante agradáveis de serem vistos e bem divertidos.

In the first film, the gang is after Las Vegas high shot Terry Benedict and the three casinos that he own, namely the Bellagio, the Mirage and the MGM Grand. Incidently he is also the new boyfriend of Danny’s lost love Tess. Using all the tricks in the book - and several others that you couldn’t find in there - the eleven of them are trying to steal no less than160 000 000 dollar from Benedict. Plenty of things occur during these attempts, to the background of a really great soundtrack.

Oceans Eleven is carried by a bunch of terrific actors, all managing to play their characters with the ease that it takes for this movie to balance humour and tension. Both in this and the two movies that follow, we have the pleasure of watching George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Andy Garcia, Matt Damon, Casey Affleck and Elliott Gould among others.

A few “guest actors” worth mentioning in the trilogy are Julia Roberts, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Al Pacino and Ellen Barkin. Many of the scenes are taking place inside casinos or at poker tables. And yes, there is foul play.

Ocean’s Eleven is based on the ‘60s cult movie with Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin as the leading men. The modern version is a bit more shaped by the so called MTV-generation, in the sense that there is more of everything. More editing, more colour, more violence, more jokes, more references to different kinds of popular culture. The Oceans-movies have made it a bit of their trademark to contain a certain kind of dialogue where the characters fill in each others sentences a lot. Pauses and silences are also an important part of the script, with adds a lot to the comedy part of the movies.

Ocean’s Twelve is about the problem that occurs when an old friend unexpectedly collects a very large debt – with interest – and how that problem is solved by stealing more… Once again, poker playing, roulette spinning and wagering are themes throughout the movie.

In Ocean’s Thirteen there are many sequences where it’s emphasized how our anti-heroes are getting older, or at least growing up. There is an adorable scene where super cool Rusty (Brad Pitt), surprises super cool Danny Ocean (George Clooney) watching Oprah, drinking red wine and crying. When Rusty sceptically enters his apartment and sees the rest of the show together with Danny, he himself is moved to tears by how Oprah is doing charity.

All in all, the three movies are of course similar to each other. But that doesn’t stop them from being equally entertaining and worth seeing.

I reckon that the best solution to my problem is to just move. Pack my things and head for the southern part of Spain or something like that. I can just imagine leaning back in a chair at some outdoors café, spending whole afternoons just betting, raising, winning, even losing… If my friends could come with, then there would be no question about it. The problem is that we are all so attached to families and jobs, so it would pretty much never happen. At least not the nearest fifteen years.

Until then, maybe I should by a tent or something and keep in the yard. I could buy one of those infra heat thingys, and everything would be good for at least three more months of the year. But once the frickin’ snow hits… Then I would be left with no choice but to hit the online casinos again. I guess that is fine, though.

I also like to play in the evening, much more than I like to play on daytime. I think my mind gets sharper somewhere after 5 or so, and I enjoy being awake in the night much more than I like it in the morning. I am somewhat of a night owl, so I always prefer to join a game that is set at a bar or at a night open café.
In general, I have realized that I care less and less about the actual game. I take much more pleasure in the social part of poker playing. Catching up with buddies, telling stories, pulling jokes, teasing and laughing. Poker is one of the best ways to spend time together in my opinion.
I just have to get that house in the South, and then everything would be perfect.

But, no, not too many movies on the particular topic poker. But in 2007 the movie “Lucky You” was shot, with Eric Bana and Drew Barrymore as the leading actors. A wise casting choice; he is handsome and laid-back enough to appeal to the male crowd and most women don’t mind identifying themselves with sweet Barrymore.

The setting is good ol’ Las Vegas in 2003, where poker amateur Huck (Bana) is trying to make his fortune through gambling. He is a skilled player, but less good at knowing when to leave the game. One evening he meets Billie (Barrymore) with whom he starts something in the likes of a relationship with. At the same time Hucks father (played by Robert Duvall) is in town to compete in the high stake games. He is a prize-winning poker player, and the World Series of Poker Tournament is coming up. This is something that Huck is very aware of as well…

Actually, the fictitious World Series of Poker in the movie had many similarities with the real WSOP that was held in 2003. Both had 839 players and both were won by someone who had next to no experience in playing in a live tournament.

The movie admittedly has a couple of flaws. The tempo is a bit too slow, which could have been easily solved with a little better editing. Also, the character of Huck has a poor man’s life which isn’t all that credible, seeing what a great poker player he is.

Apart from that, the movie is worth the time for anyone that likes the work of Eric Bana. Already in films such as Troy and The Hulk he showed that he can balance power and weakness in a believable way. He is very good at playing restraint. In my point of view, Drew Barrymore did her best performance ever in the indie movie Donnie Darko, but she has never had any real problems playing her characters in a gripping way. Too bad she has one foot stuck in the love comedy swamp…

If you are into card games, I’d recommend this movie merely based on how fun it is to watch high stake-poker. In this case the playing might be a bit too extreme to be considered realistic, but personally I don’t mind.
Christopher Reeves probably didn’t believe in Superman either. Still must have been good fun playing him.

The Strip is luminous from neon and blinding lights, mirrors, windows and jewelleries. The fountain show outside Bellagio is spectacular, almost hypnotizing. There seem to be a hotel in every corner, and where there aren’t hotels there are casinos. I barely know how to describe them; some of them are plain but others are quite something. Over-weight Americans are standing at the slot machines in row after row, throwing peanuts in their mouths. Beautiful women dressed like peacocks enter the room. They get a lot of attention from the photographing Japanese crowd and the chatty Germans, while the players at the roulette tables are way too focused to care. Since the alcohol is for free as long as you are playing, many “smart” visitors take a seat at a game just for the sake of the drinks. Within an hour most of them have spent so much money by betting unwisely, that it more than covers the casinos expenses.

Barry Manilow is performing somewhere and there is a lot of talk about that. Celine Dion will not be playing in Las Vegas anymore, making room for Cher.

The hotel is clean and nice, but not particularly fancy. While I pass places like Four Hotels and Caesars Palace I am silently wishing that I was more of a millionaire than I am. Maybe the time has come from me to try my luck/skills at one of the poker tables? Me and my friends decide to pay a visit to the Casino at MGM Grand. It is beautiful in there, and the atmosphere is more relaxed than I thought it would be. We start playing Blackjack, but I am on a losing streak. One of my friends wins a couple of hundred dollars which makes the rest of us think that we could easily do the same. Bad mistake. We go for Baccarat, which usually means fairly good odds. Another of my friends wins about a hundred dollar. Frustrated, and with about a hundred dollars less than what I came with, I sit down at one of the poker tables. The game is Three-Card Poker. I am getting decent cards, but at this point I have been drinking so many White Russians that I bet way too boldly. However, I manage to win back my losses and now I have what I came with. My friends are by the slots, where coins are falling like rain and the lights are flickering. I switch to Let It Ride Poker and finally I am actually winning some. Two of my pals come to join me, and luckily enough they convince me to leave while I am doing well.

We go for a delicious late dinner at Spago. Since we are staying at one of the low budget hotels we can afford a three meal dinner with fine wine. We stay there for the rest of the evening, just enjoying ourselves, talking about the odd Las Vegas culture.

The day after I am back at the poker tables, where the house collects all the money I’d won the night before. Of course.

Reconozco que la solución a mi problema es mudarme. Empacar mis cosas e irme a la parte sur de España o algo parecido. Me puedo imaginar sentado en una silla en algún café: tardes enteras apostando, ganando, hasta perdiendo… Si mis amigos pudieran venir, no habría nada que discutir. El problema es que estamos tan atados a la familia y a los respectivos trabajos, así que no creo que vaya a suceder. Al menos no dentro de los próximos quince años.

Hasta entonces, tal vez debería armar una tienda o algún rancho en el jardín. Podría comprar uno de esas cosas con calor y todo estaría bien al menos unos pocos meses al año. Pero una vez más, la maldita nieve cae… entonces no me quedaría otra alternativa que seguir con los casinos en línea. Aunque me parece que eso estaría bien.

También me gusta jugar en las noches, más que lo que me gusta jugar durante el día. Creo que mi mente es más aguda después de las 5 y disfruto estar despierto en las noches más que en las mañanas. Soy algo así como un vampiro, así que prefiero unirme a un juego que se lleve a cabo en un bar o en la noche en un café.
En general, he realizado que me importa cada vez menos el juego en sí. Lo que me importa es la parte social del jugar poker. Me da tanto placer conversar con los amigos, contar historias, dar bromas, molestar y reírnos. El poker es una de las mejores formas de pasar el rato.
Solamente tengo que conseguirme una casa en el sur y todo estará bien.

For me it makes a big difference where I play when it comes to poker. Even though I don’t mind the occasional online poker game, I prefer to play with friends in real life. And more than anything I prefer to play outside, when it is warm. There are two problems though; the wind, and the cold. Especially in the north, where I am from. There are just, like, three months of the year when it is warm enough to really enjoy sitting outside. Five months at the most. If the weather is good, though, and it is not windy, then I can spend hours and hours in the back yard playing poker with friends of mine.

La versión moderna es un poco más adaptada a la llamada generación MTV, en el sentido de que hay un poco más de todo. Más edición, más violencia, más color, más bromas, más referencias a diferentes formas de cultura pop. Las películas Ocean han hecho un poco su propio estilo, ya que contienen cierto tipo de diálogo en donde los actores rellenan las oraciones de los otros con mucha frecuencia. Pausas y silencios son importantes partes del guión, lo que ayuda a las partes de la película que son comedia.

Ocean’s Twelve se trata del problema que ocurre cuando un viejo amigo viene a cobrar inesperadamente una deuda muy grande (y con interés) y de cómo ese problema se resuelve robando más… Una vez más, juegos de poker, ruletas y apuestas son temas centrales a lo largo de la película.

En Ocean’s Thirteen hay muchas secuencias en donde se enfatiza cómo estos antihéroes se están poniendo más viejos, o al menos, creciendo. Hay una adorable escena en donde el súper cool Rusty (Brad Pitt), sorprende al super cool Danny Ocean (George Clooney) viendo Oprah, tomando vino tinto y llorando. Cuando Rusty entra a su apartamento en forma escéptica y ve el resto del programa con Danny, él mismo se pone a llorar al ver a Oprah hacienda obras de caridad.
Con todo y todo, las res películas, por supuesto son similares unas de las otras. Pero esto no impide que sean igualmente entretenidas y que valga la pena verlas.
